Frequently asked questions
Tadelakt is an ancient plaster technique made from natural lime. This plastering technique originated in Morocco and is thought to be around 2,000 years old. The word "tadelakt" comes from the Arabic word tadleek, which means "to rub or massage". Tadelakt is made from limestone and is applied by rubbing it with a polished stone while it's curing. The Berbers originally used tadelakt to create waterproof cisterns, but it's now traditionally used in bathrooms, showers, and backsplashes.
Tadelakt furniture combines timeless beauty with eco-conscious design. Each piece is handcrafted, showcasing tadelakt's soft sheen and natural texture. The material's versatility allows for a wide range of colors, from soft neutrals to rich, bold tones, making every item a one-of-a-kind statement piece.
Yes, tadelakt is an environmentally sustainable material. It is made from natural, non-toxic lime and sealed with olive oil soap, making it both durable and safe for the environment. Additionally, its longevity and minimal maintenance requirements further reduce its environmental impact.
Tadelakt furniture requires minimal maintenance. To clean, simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth and a mild, natural olive oil soap if needed. PLEASE AVOID using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to preserve the finish.

All Urban Berber Design pieces are handcrafted using traditional Moroccan tadelakt plaster, made from natural lime, marble sand, and mineral-based pigments. Our materials are carefully selected for their sustainability, richness, and organic feel, resulting in sculptural furniture that is both functional and artistic.
Due to the handmade nature of our process, slight variations and imperfections are part of what makes each piece uniquely yours.
Please Note:
• Natural materials, organic character
Tadelakt is composed of lime and fine marble sand, finished with olive soap for water resistance. We use only natural mineral pigments, which do not always fully dissolve. As a result, you may notice slight color starring or pigment streaks in the finish. These are not flaws, but a natural result of working with raw, earth-based materials.
• Cracking, checking & hairline fissures
Small surface lines may appear over time due to the multi-coat layering process inherent in tadelakt application. These are known as checking or fissures and are cosmetic only. They do not indicate any weakness or instability in the finish and are considered part of the authentic tadelakt aesthetic.
• Water-resistant, not waterproof
Tadelakt is sealed with olive soap to create a natural water-resistant barrier. However, it is not waterproof. Avoid standing water or prolonged moisture exposure. Always wipe spills promptly and use coasters or trays beneath planters, drinks, or candles.
• Indoor use unless specified
Standard finishes are intended for indoor use only. Outdoor exposure, excessive humidity, or direct sunlight can alter the surface and degrade the finish unless the piece has been specially sealed for those conditions.
• Measurement tolerance
Because of material build-up during the plastering process, final dimensions may vary slightly. Custom orders are completed within ¼ inch of the requested size.
• Functional artwork
Our furniture is designed to be both sculptural and functional. That said, avoid dragging heavy objects across the surface, and do not sit or stand on pieces not built for weight-bearing use.
By purchasing from Urban Berber Design, you acknowledge and accept the natural characteristics of handcrafted tadelakt—such as color variation, minor surface movement, and evolving texture—knowing that each piece is unique, and made with intention.
